ELD Event Types

Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) are event recorders.  When an event occurs (ex: the truck moves), it is recorded. Per the ELD Mandate, each event requires specific pieces of data to be captured.  There are seven different event types that occur on an ELD.  The table below contains the data elements required along the left hand side for each event type along the top. Each event type has been assigned a number value by the ELD Mandate and the mobile application will display the event type as a number.

Change in Duty Status (1)

Intermediate recording when the CMV is in motion and there has been no change of duty status entered into the ELD and no other intermediate status recorded in an hour (2)

Special Driving Condition is Selected (ex: Personal Conveyance) (3)

Daily Log is Certified (4) Log out/Log In (5) CMV Engine On/Off (6) ELD Malfunction or Data Diagnostic is Detected (7)

Driver Identifier

Record Originator

• Defines a user that created/edited a record in the output file

• Includes users from Encompass that requested an edit

Vehicle Identifier

Motor Carrier

Shipping Document Number

Event Sequence ID

• Must track at least the last 65, 536 unique events recorded on the ELD

• Continuous numbering across all users of that ELD and across engine and ELD power on and off cycles

• Mapped into a continuous hexadecimal number between 0000 (Decimal 0) and FFFF (Decimal 65535)

Event Record Status

• 1=active

• 2=inactive changed

• 3=inactive change requested

• 4=inactive change rejected

Event Record Origin

• 1=automatically by ELD

• 2=edited or entered by driver

• 3=edit requested by an authenticated user other than the driver

• 4=assumed from unidentified driver profile

Event Code—1 character

Event Date—must be captured in UTC date <MMDDYY>

Event Time—must be captured in UTC time <HHMMSS>

Date of Certified Record—must be captured in UTC date <MMDDYY>

Time Zone Offset from UTC—Record the offset from UTC time to the driver’s home terminal time

(valid values: 04 to 11)

Accumulated Vehicle Miles—Range between 0 and 9,999 (whole miles)

• Miles traveled since last CMV power-on event

Total Vehicle Miles—Range between 0 and 9,999,999 (whole miles)

Elapsed Engine Hours—6 minute resolution (0.1 hr)

• Engine hours accumulated since last CMV power-on event

Total Engine Hours—6 minute resolution (0.1 hr)

Latitude

• Output to 2 decimal precision for conventional location precision (can be recorded at higher precision)

• Output to 1 decimal precision for reduced location precision (can be recorded at higher precision)

• Format:  -90.00 to 90.00

• Recorded (outputted) as “M” when manual location required to be entered

Longitude

• Output to 2 decimal precision for conventional location precision (can be recorded at higher precision)

• Output to 1 decimal precision for reduced location precision (can be recorded at higher precision)

• Format:  -90.00 to 90.00

• Recorded (outputted) as “M” when manual location required to be entered

Distance Since Last Valid GPS Coordinates

• Whole miles the vehicle has traveled since last valid GPS fix

• Values recorded should be 0 through 6 – if distance traveled since last valid fix exceeds 6, record 6

Driver’s Location Description

• If valid GPS fix has not been obtained in most recent elapsed 5 miles of driving and an ELD Event is recorded due to a change in duty status for the driver, ELD must prompt the driver to enter the location manually

• 5-60 characters

Malfunction/Data Diagnostic Event Indicator Status—1 character (0 = no active malfunction or 1 = at least one active malfunction)

Malfunction/Diagnostic Codes—1 character  (see tables on page 5)

Event Comment/Annotation

• 0-60 characters if optionally entered

• 4-60 characters if annotation is required and prompted to enter

Event Data Check

• Hexadecimal value calculated per specifications in 4.4.5.1

When viewing logs in a Roadside Inspection, each event will have an Event Type and Code.  The table below provides what each pairing of the event type and code represent.
