CSA Basic Information

CSA Information

The FMCSA's Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program is a key initiative designed to improve the safety of motor carriers and drivers on the roads. It employs a data-driven approach, utilizing information gathered from roadside inspections, crash reports, and investigation results from the past two years to evaluate carriers' safety performance. The Safety Measurement System (SMS) is a key component of CSA, evaluating carriers' safety performance across seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). The ultimate goal of CSA is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses, ensuring a safer transportation environment for all road users.

For those in the industry, understanding and adhering to CSA guidelines is essential for maintaining compliance and achieving a favorable Safety Fitness Determination (SFD) rating, which reflects a carrier's overall safety condition. CSA in Encompass

Encompass displays CSA Driver and CSA Fleet Scores in a quick, convenient way that helps your company monitor your safety. The FMCSA uses a motor carrier’s safety data that is transmitted by state and federal enforcement to the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS). The past two years’ worth of roadside inspection and crash reports contain critical data elements used in CSA’s elaborate algorithms. That information can be pulled into Encompass for viewing.
