Practicing Safety During VR Training

This guidance pertains to those who utilize the Virtual Reality service.

Safety should be a priority when using VR equipment. There are risks of injury if you do not set up the play area or equipment properly, or if learners are not cautious of their surroundings.

Here are some safety tips for you and your learners:

  • Wear any wrist straps provided with the headset.
    • Wrist straps will prevent learners from dropping or throwing the controllers. This will protect the equipment and others nearby.
  • Keep objects, pets, and people out of the play/training area when training is in session.
    • Virtual boundaries help keep the learner safe
  • Be sure to communicate clearly if you enter the play area to assist the learner.
    • The learner cannot see anyone or anything the room while wearing the headset unless they are near a boundary line.
  • Keep multiple play areas separate.
    • If you have multiple headsets and multiple learners in a training session at one time, ensure there is ample space between the play/training areas. This can prevent learners from colliding.
  • Limit the amount of continual training time with a headset to 30 minutes or less.
    • Too much time in the headset can cause motion sickness or the learner might feel disoriented when they come back to the real world. Most VR manufacturers recommend taking a 10-15 minute break every 30 minutes.
  • Clean the headset parts and controllers between each use.
    • Clean equipment can help prevent the spread of germs and infections. A dry or damp soft cloth can be used on most headsets to remove sweat and oils from the headset's foam pieces and the controllers. You may want to avoid using liquid or chemical cleaners.
