Hazardous Waste Accumulation
This tracking feature will simplify the way you track Waste Accumulation across your operations by allowing Waste Generators to:
- Track waste by Container, Location, and Storage Area.
- Calculate accumulation for both acute and non-acute waste.
- Trigger Alerts when waste must be moved from Satellite to Central Accumulation Areas.
- Set Tasks and Reminders for the transfer of waste offsite based on your Generator Status.
Note: This tool requires you to set your Generator Status for each Location and create your Waste Storage Areas in the Company Data area to track your acute and non-acute waste accurately.
Step 1 - Create your waste storage container(s)
To create your Waste Storage Container(s), start by clicking Add Container.

For each container of waste, define the contents, Location, Storage Area, Status, Container Type, Waste Type, and Distance from your Waste Facility. Note: The Statuses of Accumulating, Type of Waste, and Distance from Disposal Facility are used to determine accumulation rates and your Required Ship Date for each container.
Note: Waste Codes are alphanumeric identifiers to classify hazardous waste to help track waste from cradle to grave. EPA Waste Codes appear on hazardous waste manifests, allowing regulators to follow waste from its origin to its final permitted disposal site. Types of Waste Codes area as follows:
- D-Codes (Characteristic Wastes): For wastes exhibiting ignitability (D001), corrosivity (D002), reactivity (D003), or toxicity (D004-D043).
- F-Codes (Non-Specific Sources): Waste from common industrial processes, like spent solvents (e.g., F001-F005).
- K-Codes (Source-Specific Wastes): From specific industries, such as pesticide manufacturing.
- P- & U-Codes (Discarded Commercial Chemical Products): For unused, discarded commercial chemical products, with P-codes being acutely hazardous.
You can use the help link to help identify the proper codes and then assign them using the Select Code(s) function in the container record.

Step 2 - Track waste accumulation
Once your Storage Containers are defined, you can begin to add your Waste Accumulation. Click Add Accumulation and a drawer will slide in from the right. Enter the Amount, Unit of Measure, and Density of the waste. Click Calculate to convert your values into gallons and kilograms. Click Save.
Notes:
- Upon adding your first waste entry, your Start Date for accumulation will be set.
- If the container is a Central Accumulation Area (CAA), Accumulation Start Date will be used to calculate your required Ship Date based upon your Generator Status set for that Location.
- If unsure of your waste’s Density, try referring to the product’s SDS Section 9 - Physical & Chemical Properties for guidance.
If your container is in a Central Accumulation Area (CAA), as you add your accumulating waste, this feature will track the total and issue Reminders 30- and 15-days prior to the upcoming required Ship Date. If you miss the Ship Date, a Reminder will also be issued to notify you that the transfer of waste offsite is past due. All Reminders will appear on your Compliance Calendar.

If your container is in a Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA), waste will be tracked until the combined volume of all containers equals or exceeds 55 gallons for non-acute waste or 1 kilogram (kg) of acute waste. Reminders will be generated to move the SAA waste to the CAA to keep you compliant.
Notes:
- If your container is in a SAA, the Start Date and the required Ship Date are not calculated until the container is moved to a CAA.
- Monthly Accumulation Warning: Notifications are generated for Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQGs) and Small Quantity Generators (SQGs) when they are nearing their accumulation threshold for their Generator Status.
- Nearing/Over Threshold: Notifications are also generated for VSQGs and SQGs to alert that the total accumulation at any one Location is in danger of exceeding the accumulation threshold for the respective Generator Status.
- Episodic Generation Alert: Notifications are also generated for VSQGs and SQGs to alert them that they have exceeded their normal monthly accumulation and must notify the EPA of the event.
Step 3 - Log disposal information
Containers with a Required Ship Date, once shipped offsite, should have their status changed from Accumulating to Shipped, and Disposal Information entered to capture actual Ship Date, Manifest Number, and to indicate whether the Manifest has been received. As with all SMS features, Attachments and Notes can be included to complete the lifecycle of the container.
